The offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs hit its first snag so far as the news came out that Pro-Browler Justin Houston suffered ACL damage at some point towards the end of the season but was not discovered until recently.
Houston and the team determined that Houston required ACL repair surgery, which took place in February, and the leading pass rusher for the Chiefs is now on a time table of 6-12 months for recovery.
While some players, such as Jamaal Charles, are able to recover quicker than others and make their way back to the field, it is not known how Houston will respond to the surgery and how long his rehab will take. Many would think a safe bet would be a 9-month rehab which would potentially have Houston back on the field by October, but many variables remain and it’s almost impossible to say.
There is a chance the Chiefs organization will decide to shut down Houston for the season, particularly after recently signing him to a large contract.
If he is slated to miss the majority of the season, it may not be the best decision to try and force him back on the field more than halfway through the schedule. The question of being football shape is also something to consider if you’re the coaching and training staff.
With its star pass rusher out, Kansas City may have to adjust its approach to the NFL Draft. Most analysts have the Chiefs taking an offensive lineman in the first round, and although that may remain the same, the Chiefs could look to gain a pass rusher earlier in the draft, particularly with the loss of their third-round pick due to tampering penalties recently handed down by the commissioners office.
With the resigning of Tamba Hali and linebacker Dee Ford trending in the right direction, Andy Reid will need his players to pick up the slack.
