As we waited around the TV all night last night in anticipation of the Chiefs making a first round selection, we waited only to learn that the Chiefs had traded their 28th overall pick to San Francisco, so they could draft a guard. As soon as William Jackson III, the CB from Houston, was selected by the Bengals with the 25th pick, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion the Chiefs would be best served trading their first round pick.

The Chiefs received the better deal out of this trade, even if the guard from Stanford the 9’ers took turns out the be All-Pro, who cares. The Chiefs don’t have any holes on their roster coming into a draft for the first time in a while. It’s almost like they’re playing with house money. We now know what the Patriots have been experiencing all these years. It’s come to the point where Andy Reid and Jon Dorsey can make a move in the draft, and we won’t look at it as the wrong move. We look at it as a plan, and this years’ draft plan goes as such…

The Chiefs are in a position right now where they can pile up as many picks as possible, even if it means giving up a first round pick. After the trade with San Fran, the Chiefs now have 8 draft picks. Not bad, considering a third round pick was taken away by the NFL for tampering with the free agency of Jeremy Maclin. KC now has two picks in the second round where they will get two players that are of similar talent as the 28th pick. The gap in talent between picks 28 and 59 isn’t as large as you think.

Add that with the two picks in the 4th, 5th, and 6th rounds, the Chiefs are in great position to add some depth to a roster that is already stacked. This first round trade was the best thing possible for the Chiefs. They had a few DB’s in mind, taken. Maybe Will Fuller or Laquan Treadwell, taken. There have been some rumors that maybe the Chiefs were considering trading up to Minnesota’s spot to take Treadwell, let them have that. The Chiefs can get a WR in the second round or later who you can expect to get some looks from Alex Smith this season.
