Saturday, January 6th, is the day for us, Chiefs Kingdom. On that day, we will watch as the Kansas City Chiefs play the Wild Card game at Arrowhead. The Chiefs vs Titans will be one game we all need to watch. We haven’t played the Titans this year. Perhaps not all of Chiefs Kingdom may be aware of who the team is. The Titans fell under everyone’s radar, as there were not headliners for the team this season. However, that doesn’t mean the Chiefs vs Titans game is a given. Here’s what we need to know about who these Titans are.
Who Are the Tennessee Titans?
The Titans Roster
The defensive line of the Titans will be one the Chiefs are going to have to overcome. The Chiefs are a big-play kind of team. Alex Smith, Tyreek Hill and Kareem Hunt all rank in the top 3 or above in the NFL for big plays of over 20-or-more yards. The Titans defense on the other hand, rank #1 is containing those big plays from happening.
Brett Kern, the Titans punter, lead the league in both gross and net punting for the 2017 season. This could be a big factor if the Titans can’t finish out the touchdown. Kern will have to step in and make big kicks in order to keep the Chiefs from gaining ground.
Titans Runningbacks
DeMarco Murray did not practice Wednesday, just three days prior to the big game on Saturday for the Chiefs vs Titans. The running back is an essential piece to the offense. However, head coach Mike Mularkey suggested this does not mean the Murray is out for the game.
The Titans have Derrick Henry, who ran for 51 yards against the Jaguars to make it to the Wild Card game. As a running back, Henry has the opportunity to force the #28th ranked Chiefs defense, to tighten up and try to stop him.
Titans Quarterback
The thick of the team comes from their QB. Marcus Mariota, born Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota, was drafted by the Titans as the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Before the draft, Mariota was the star QB for the University of Oregon. He lead the Ducks to a 12-1 record his freshman year and a 2013 Fiesta Bowl Championship. High school days are over but Marcus is still going in the NFL. In his first regular season NFL game against the Buccaneers, Mariota threw for 209 yards in a 42-14 victory. He became the first ever QB in NFL history to attain a “perfect passer rating” in his first regular season game back in 2015. However, this season he suffered from a hamstring injury against the Texans back in October. Since then, he has recovered and is back to 100%.
Tennessee Titans Record
The Titans made it to the playoffs this year for the first time since 2008. Earlier this year, the Chiefs vs Titans preseason game resulted in a 30-6 win for the Chiefs. Although each team changes throughout the season and the game Saturday will be a whole new ball game. The Tennessee Titans went 9-7 in the NFL regular season. The Kansas City Chiefs went 10-6.
The Titans Conference Play
The TN Titans play in the AFC South Division along with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars. In their division, the Titans went 5-1. Their only loss was to the Texans after Mariota suffered from a hamstring injury. In conference, the Titans went 8-4-0.
The Chiefs vs Titans Game
On Saturday, the AFC West Champion Chiefs will find out who the Titans really are. Is the team just a bunch of guys who have lost three of the last four games of the NFL season? Is it a team with a star Quarterback drafted second overall in the 2015 draft? Today, we will dig a little deeper into the team to who they really are. On the other hand, we hope the Titans are doing some research into the Kansas City Chiefs. We know who the Chiefs are and man oh man are we AWESOME! With Chiefs history made this year, they became only the second team in all of NFL history to have a 4,000-yard quarterback (Alex Smith), a 1,000-yard rusher (Kareem Hunt), a 1,000-yard receiver (Tyreek Hill) and a 1,000-yard tight end (Travis Kelce) all in one season. Talk about a team, the Titans may need to really look at.
